Sketchbook Project: Cover

Front cover

I'm nearly complete the 2012 sketchbook project. This is good news as it needs to be in the mail before the end of January. I have one spread left, the inside and outside back cover and then minor touch ups.

I put down a layer of blue and brown watercolour on the cover and then added self portraits. One of present me and the other when I was little. (Yes, that is an 80s mushroom cut.) The text reads "If I spoke to my younger self and said ask me how I can help this is the advice I'd pass along".

Inside front cover and first page

On the inside front cover I began by printing out a pattern of photos onto T-shirt image transfer paper. I sprayed it with alcohol and rubbed it onto the kraft paper. Once removed it has a old and weathered look. I glued down the transfer paper to the first page and hand wrote "ask me how I can help". I added a bit of the same brown and blue from the cover to the inside.

On my last stage of touch ups I may change a bit on the cover. I'll let it sit for a while and see how I feel in a few weeks.

If you're also participating in the Sketchbook Project, do you create your cover first or last?

  1. I bite my nails nervously every time you post about the sketchbook project. I have only done 2 drawings so far - OOAK got in my way. I am hoping I will turbo through it come the new year. I love that transfer technique - somewhat has the look of solvent transfer but you instead have COLOR!

Last year for my cover, I bound it in a dyed rabbit pelt that was black... althought no one ever got to see it as it ended up lost... This year, I am approaching my sketchbook as a TRIBUTE to my one from last year that got "lost" ahem*stolen IMO*ahem, so all of the images & sketches will somewhat relate to the spread from my previous book. This is why i chose the theme "I REMEMBER YOU." I am planning to bind my book in a fantastic furry white cowhide. The leather is cut down and ready, but I probably won't ATTACH it on there until my drawings are finished.

Keep up all the hard work jeannine!!!

  3. What a cool interpretation of the theme! Your front cover looks awesome. I did my cover first, and it's kind of a hot mess. Oh well, I keep telling myself its a *sketch* book, not a perfect masterpiece book;)
