I have been working on this mixed media piece for several months. Not that it took me many (wo)man hours to create it, but I would tuck it away for weeks at a time until some inspiration hit me. It's ready to be revealed and I'll write a little bit about it.
I started out by layering watercolour with a palette of olive green, electric blue and neon pink. After the first stage was dry, I darkened some areas with another layer of paint and added salt for texture. I added the network of triangles with white acrylic paint, drew the trees at the top with pen and stamped the raindrops and wheat. I finished off with the pair of cuddling owls, also done with a pen.
All along the way I never had a perfect vision as to what I wanted to appear. I just went with what came to me upon seeing the shapes the watercolour wash made. While I was taking pictures I liked a few close ups of certain areas and now I think I have an idea for a new set of paintings. Here are my favourite close ups:
Beautiful! I especially like the trees.
ReplyDeleteyes the details are delicious!!! is this a subconcious self portrait of you and your hubs??? You've landed safe and sound in the coast, with the BC trees in the background, rainy humid days around you and right on the edge of the page a small area of your neighbouring province alberta with the wheat!!! aw yea, the BFA comes in handy for a saylor-made-psycho-analyzation.
ReplyDeletebeautiful! The whole composition is wonderful. I think my favorite part is the tree line at the top.
ReplyDeleteYou're right, I was definitely thinking about Hubs and myself when I made the owls. Not that we're wise, old owls (well, not wise at least). ;-)
ReplyDeleteAlso definitely putting pieces of me into it ie: the rain from where I am now and the wheat from the Sask fields from where I am from.
Outsourcing this to Nature's My Friend next time. Hehe.
I love the layers...and the lonely trees on the peninsula...it feels like we are there...
ReplyDeleteThis is stunning! I agree with all the comments - really love the layers. I especially like the mix of soft watercolours with the harder black lines and then the geometry of the white triangles. Very cool.
ReplyDeleteSuch a beautiful watercolour Jeannine! Love that you've been using your stamps on it. The colours are gorgeous and go so well together. I think these works can be so deceiving because at first it looks unstructured so the assumption of a someone who hasn't tried to do it might be that it all just falls into place effortlessly. But taking a good look at this you can see you've balanced it so well and each section complements the next. The white triangles are a really nice contrast ot the black lines but they "clicks" so well together. Great work.
ReplyDeleteThank you all for your comments. I admire all your work so to have you send me positive comments makes my day-week-month.
ReplyDeleteThis one remains one of my favorites! I think I commented before but don't see it now... did you eventually hang it in your home? Are you selling prints? :)
ReplyDeleteOh dear! I never delete comments I wonder if Disqus is up to something. It is tucked away in my art room. I think I might swap out an old calendar print for this in one of my frames. I also really like it and I think you're right, I should make prints one day.
